PUBLIC ARCHIVES AND RESEARCH SECTION


The Public archives and Research Section processes and manages Public archives(create link to public archives on the collections page)(records of historical value generated by government agencies) and Historical Manuscripts (create link to historical manuscripts on the collections page) (records of historical value from individuals and private organisations). The collection includes deceased estates, family history, criminal and civil records, census records, marriage and baptism certificates, records of service of uniformed forces.

The public archives and research collection (Create a link to the collections page)dates back to 1890 and the size of the collection is approximately 22 000 cubic feet. The section is also responsible for giving access provision to researchers both local and foreign, historians, scholars and the general public. The Research Section officers manage the issue and return system at the Control Desk. Minor inquiries, telephonic, direct or written are also dealt with by officers in this Section. Special deposits and exhibits(Create a link to special deposits and exhibitions on the collections page)are received and accessioned in the Research Section.

Permanent and temporary exhibitions are mounted and maintained by archivists. Guided educational tours are also the responsibility of the Section. On permanent display in the Beit Trust Gallery is an exhibition designed to illustrate the country's history from the earliest times by means of objects, pictures, documents and paintings. This is supplemented by a series of special displays changed from time to time to mark outstanding occasions and subjects.
